Drywall damage happens in almost every home. Whether it's caused by moving furniture, accidental impacts, doorknobs, or everyday wear and tear, damaged drywall can make an otherwise beautiful room look neglected.

The good news is that many drywall repairs can be completed successfully with the right tools, materials, and techniques. Below is a simple step-by-step guide showing how professional drywall contractors repair holes in drywall.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

The first step is to inspect the damaged area and determine the extent of the repair needed. Small dents and nail holes can often be filled with spackle, while larger holes require cutting out the damaged section and installing a new drywall patch.

Always remove any loose drywall or torn paper before beginning the repair.

Step 2: Cut Out and Prepare the Damaged Area

Using a drywall saw or utility knife, cut the damaged section into a clean square or rectangle. Straight, clean cuts make it easier to install a patch and achieve a seamless repair.

Once the damaged area has been removed, install wood backing behind the opening to provide support for the new drywall patch.

Step 3: Install the Drywall Patch

Measure and cut a new piece of drywall to fit the opening. Secure the patch to the backing using drywall screws, ensuring the patch sits flush with the existing wall surface.

Proper installation at this stage is critical for achieving a smooth final finish.

Step 4: Tape and Apply Joint Compound

Apply fiberglass mesh tape over all seams surrounding the patch. The tape helps reinforce the repair and reduces the likelihood of future cracking.

Next, apply multiple thin coats of joint compound, feathering each coat wider than the previous one. Professional drywall finishers know that several thin coats always produce better results than one thick coat.

Allow each coat to dry completely before sanding and applying the next.

Step 5: Sand, Prime, and Finish

Once the final coat has dried, lightly sand the repair until it blends seamlessly with the surrounding wall. After sanding, apply a quality primer before painting.

When completed correctly, the repair should completely disappear once painted.

When to Call a Professional

While many minor drywall repairs can be completed by homeowners, larger repairs, ceiling damage, water damage, and extensive cracking are often best left to experienced professionals.
